What is Jiu Jitsu? Where did 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu come from?

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art with origins in feudal Japan, developed for samurai as a method of combat, including techniques like throws, joint locks, and strikes.
When Jiu-Jitsu was introduced to Brazil in the early 20th century, it evolved into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) through the efforts of the Gracie family, who emphasized ground fighting and submission techniques. Grand Master Jean Jacques Machado, a legendary competitor and member of the Gracie family, played a pivotal role in bringing BJJ to America, significantly contributing to its growth and popularity outside Brazil.

In the late 1990s, Eddie Bravo, a prominent student of Machado, further transformed the art by introducing 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. Bravo’s innovative no-gi style focused on practical techniques for real-life self-defense and MMA, where opponents are not wearing traditional gis. His groundbreaking contributions, including techniques like the Rubber Guard the Truck and Twister, have significantly shaped the evolution of modern Jiu-Jitsu. Bravo’s influence has made 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu a major force in the sport of Jiu Jitsu, highlighting its adaptability and relevance in contemporary self-defense and mixed martial arts.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first Jiu-Jitsu class, we suggest wearing a T-shirt and shorts that are comfortable and suitable for getting sweaty. Opt for clothing that fits snugly and avoid items with pockets, plastic, or metal buttons and zippers, as these can be hazardous and uncomfortable during training.

Do I need prior experience to join?

Absolutely no prior experience is needed to join! We have programs specifically designed for beginners with zero experience. Our classes are structured to provide a safe and fun environment where you can learn at your own pace and build your skills from the ground up. We’re here to support you every step of the way! The first step is to try out one of our beginners level trial classes to see it for your self!

How often should I train to see progress?

To see meaningful progress in Jiu-Jitsu, it’s generally recommended to train 2 to 3 times per week. This frequency allows you to:
Build Skills: Regular practice helps reinforce techniques and improve muscle memory.
Increase Conditioning: Consistent training enhances your physical fitness and grappling endurance.
Develop Strategy: Frequent classes provide more opportunities to understand and apply techniques in sparring.
Of course, the optimal frequency can vary based on personal goals, fitness levels, and schedules. Some practitioners train more often, especially if they are preparing for competitions, while others may train less and still see progress. Ultimately, consistency and quality of training are key factors in achieving improvement.

What is the class schedule?

Our schedule is always live and up-to-date on our website under the “Schedule” section. Please note that advanced and competition classes require a minimum skill level of a blue belt to attend. All other classes are open to white belts and beginners.

Are there any age or fitness requirements?

We start kids as early as 4 years old.

What are the membership options and fees?

We offer various membership packages to suit different needs and preferences, as there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option. To find the best package for you, we take the time to review and discuss the pros and cons of each option with you at our front desk. We recommend scheduling a “Trial Class” appointment which includes a 15 min intro with our front desk. During this appointment our front desk will go over all the options and determine which package best fits your goals. Please feel free to schedule your trial class appointment today!

What is the process for getting a belt promotion?

Our academy has very high standards and follows the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) guidelines and belting system. Belt colors for adults include White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black, with each belt level featuring up to four stripes to denote progress before advancing to the next belt.
The process for getting a belt promotion in Jiu-Jitsu generally involves the following steps:
Regular Attendance and Training: Consistently attend classes and demonstrate your commitment to learning and improving your skills.
Skill Development: Show proficiency in techniques, demonstrate understanding of Jiu-Jitsu principles, and effectively apply them in both drilling and live sparring.
Instructor Evaluation: Your instructor will assess your progress over time, considering factors such as your technical ability, performance in class, and overall attitude.
Belt Ceremony: Upon meeting the requirements, you’ll be awarded your new belt in a belt promotion ceremony, celebrating your achievement and progress.
It’s important to note that getting promoted in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not easy. It requires dedication and a commitment to the journey. Be consistent, enjoy the process, and embrace the journey as you progress through the ranks.

How do I sign up for a membership?

Start by booking a trial class appointment. We strongly encourage everyone to try a class first to ensure it’s a good fit and that you want to join our program. At the end of your trial class, our front desk staff will meet with you to discuss membership options and assist you with the sign-up process.
What is your policy on cancellations?

For members on a month-to-month agreement or those who have completed their 1-year commitment, we require a 30-day notice for cancellations. The notice must be submitted in writing via email. Please note that if you cancel before the end of the 30-day notice period, you will still be charged for that billing cycle.

What is the policy on membership holds or pauses?

For members on a month-to-month package, you can pause your membership with no fee by providing 7 days’ written notice. When requesting a freeze, please include the name on the account and the desired start and end dates. Note that billing will automatically resume when the freeze ends. If you need to extend the freeze beyond the original period, you must inform us before the auto-start date, which also requires 7 days’ written notice.
For members on a 1-year agreement, you can pause your membership with a $45 freeze fee. We can only pause memberships for up to 3 months, and the contract will be extended by the length of the pause. A 7-day written notice is required for changes to the account. If the freeze is due to an injury, the $45 fee is waived; please submit a copy of the doctor’s note along with your request for the injury-related pause.

Do you welcome Drop In visitors?

We welcome drop-in visitors from other academies who are active members elsewhere. Please note that drop-ins are intended for individuals from out of town, not for new members or locals. If you’re a local or looking to join, we encourage you to explore our trial class option instead.
